Losing weight with allergies?

August 23rd, 2010 -- Posted in kids with food allergies | 1 Comment »

Hi my name is Kari and I have two kids, the first one is 4 and the second 11 mos. With both of them I gained significant amounts of weight. Before I had children I was always a size 0-4, Now I am a size 20 Wide- 22 Wide. I can wear size 18 but feel it is too tight. Anyhow I have had allergies my whole life but there were never any real severe ones until this last pregnancy and now it seems like I can’t eat anything so I get depressed. My allergies have really taken a turn for the worse. Here is what I am allergic to, These are the Deathly ones: Peanuts, Eggs, Celery, Tomatoes, and I have minor reactions to: Bananas, Potatoes, onions and Strawberries. Anyhow I am so sensitive that I can’t even eat anything that has been made around eggs or peanuts or tomatoes. So this pretty eliminates eating out. I don’t eat fast food, and I can hardly have any candy, everything is made around nuts even gummy worms. Same with Eggs, and pasta. So here is another part of the problem, I have to cook 2 meals every time I cook because it is not fair that the rest of my family can’t have those foods just because I am allergic. So I usually go all out on cooking for my family so that way they will be healthy but then I just make whatever is easy and usually unhealthy for me because I am tired of cooking 2 meals, I can’t have mayo, and I can’t have salad dressings. Yet I feel like a cow and want to lose weight. I need to lose at least, 75 lbs. Most of my fat is on my belly. I have been starting to exercise about 3 times a week but have actually gained weight and feel down about it. Has anybody who has allergies like me ever successfully ate well and lost weight. Also It takes most of the money that we have to buy groceries to feed my husband and daughter and leaves hardly any for me to afford healthy stuff for me. I try to buy stuff we can all have together like broccoli, peas carrots, and stuff but my husband whines about wanting Jerky, or Chocolate, or snacks all the time. So then when I buy snacks I can’t afford the healthy stuff. If I buy healthy stuff then he complains he wants snacks and when I buy him snacks he complains that I am making him fat, but he doesn’t seem to get that We can’t afford both so I usually try to buy him snacks and healthy stuff that he likes because he doesn’t like what I can eat, and I just get whatever I can eat like mac n cheese cause its cheap and no eggs or I buy tuna. I eat mac n cheese almost 4-5 times a week. I am sick of it. What should I do, I’ve tried telling him that I want to only buy healthy stuff so we can lose weight. He is actually skinny he has only like 10 lbs. to lose, and I have been asking him since our daughter was born that I want a membership to a gym for during the winter and we have never been able to afford it and now that he has a little bit of fat he wants to go to the gym. I’ve been bagging him for years, and get nothing, he gains 10 lbs and its to the gym. He says he can’t get fat and that he has to go to the gym. So does that mean he doesn’t care if I get fat. I don’t matter? Also it is way cheaper if I pack his lunches for work, but he doesn’t like anything like sandwiches, noodle dishes, leftovers, brats, tacos, he always complains no matter what I make and is never happy. So he eats out all the time which we can’t afford. I’m sorry this was gonna be a simple question and ended up a monologue. If you have any advice or insight feel free to comment.

I can’t say for sure but maybe u are having a reaction to the pesticides. if you haven’t already tried, go organic or locally grown when purchasing food. and the elimination diet may work.

start by juice fasting (I recommend 3 days-starting on a friday) organic veggies and fruits…the juice will run through your system much faster than chewing, allowing to see results quiker. Not you won’t be starving! you will get the nutrients and calories that you need to sustain you and if you continue to juice you will notice that hunger pangs/pains will disappear although you may feel hungry.

When juicing find out what u can handle and what u can’t…maybe carrots work but not carrots and celery. so elimate the celery and add cumber (with a little apple for sweetness). If you really want to eat, have a salad (mixed greens or spinach) with a little lemon and olive oil.

"fasting" from starchy veggies may work also, avoid white potatoes, white bread, white rice, and white pastas and corn. introduce brown rice, whole grain (not wheat) pasta into your diet and so on. white potatoes can be replaced with yams until you know what is affecting your system.

After three days of juicing eat light balanced meals.I would suggest only having meat at one meal (lunch) and for that meat to be either, fish or chicken. no beef or pork and for now. And no dairy for 2 weeks and no starch for 1 week.

breakfast should consist of a fiber (oatmeal/oatbran) and fruit. no dairy!! however, after about 2 weeks slowly add dairy back in (yogurt is best) or cottage cheese in small amounts.

Snack, on fruit, Smoothies are a great choice, just make sure they are dairy free (no whey or milk powder) and be aware of how much sugar is in it. After 2 weeks have cottage cheese, yogurt, or a veggies sandwich on whole grain bread.

Dinner, veggies, and a lean meat. or veggies and a starch-rice, pasta. try to avoid eating meat and starct at the same meal.

drink plenty of water, exercise and keep a jounal or what is working and what is not.

Four weeks is a good start. your really have to put in the work to achieve the results you want. and because these four weeks are filled with healthy eating, you will find yourself feeling a little hungry after eating shortly after, it’s something you adjust to and take no guilt in eating another healthy snack. this is a detox diet so red meat, pork, most cheese, mayo and so forth are going to be a hinderance. try this for 4 weeks and see what works for you and then tweek it.

Snacks for kids with food allergies?

August 9th, 2010 -- Posted in kids with food allergies | 2 Comments »

My 17 month old has been diagnosed with allegies to dairy, soy, egg, nuts and seeds, shellfish, and other non food allergies. I have been trying to substituite his regular snacks which contain pretty much at least one of those ingredients (esp, egg, soy and dairy). It is really hard to find snacks he can eat. Does anyone know of any foods that are free of all those ingredients? Obviously he has plenty of fruits and veggies but he also needs grains from snacks like crackers and other breads. I just can’t find any pre-packeged items without those ingredients in them. Anyone have any recipes for homemade snacks without those things in them? Any advice or links is greatly appreciated.

my 18 month also has all those allergies as well as wheat allergy!! I recently found rice and corn containing crackers called "corn thins" made by "Real Food". I found them in Whole Foods. There are also rice and corn puffs with another name also at Whole Foods. These were not labeled gluten, etc free so you’ll have to look for them in the normal aisles. Also I remember seeing sweet potato tortilla (wheat free) chips. Will let u know the details the next time I am there…
please let me know if u find something too.

anyone know of a good cookbook for kids with food allergies?

August 1st, 2010 -- Posted in kids with food allergies | 5 Comments »

my 14 month old has severe food allergies. so far he’s allergic to eggs, nuts, wheat, oats, and soybeans.if he eats any of these or that conains any of these he turns maroon, breaks out in hives all over, his mouth and parts of his body swell up n he can’t breathe right. its pretty scary seeing your baby like that. its been really hard to find foods that doesn’t contain any of these. i need to find a good cookbook thats specifically for kids with food allergies…any suggestions?

Hi, I have celiac disease (wheat/gluten allergy) and am allergic to soy. I use Bette Hagmans Cookbooks because although everything is pretty much just gluten free she tells you how to use the recipes by substituting safe ingredients for your child in place of the eggs, and soy. The nuts in all her recipes are optional and she teaches you how to use egg replacer in her recipes. She has many cookbooks out…I have about four and there are still more out there. And her recipes are easy, even for me and I am just starting to learn to cook all these different ways too. Amazon.com is the easiest way to find all her books in one place. Also, a good website is glutensolutions.com, they sell pre-made food and you can check off you son’s allergies and it will show you the products that are safe for him to eat. Also all the ingredients for each item are listed so you can double check for everything as well. Hope this helps!

Nate coughing – heart defect – bronchomalacia

July 9th, 2010 -- Posted in kids with food allergies | 25 Comments »

for our doctors: a brief taping at the end of one of Nate’s coughing episodes to prove it was actually bad.
Finally determined: this is considered a mild ‘episodic croup’ attack beginning. It is caused from the aorta compressing the right-main-bronchus.. Starts and mimics something that is mistaken as an asthma attack. However, physiologically, it is nothing like asthma and asthma medications do nothing to improve his condition.
